On the right bank of the river Danube in the 3rd century BC, the Celtic tribe settled in this area and called it Taurunum. When the Slavs arrived in 630 the name Zemun was first used.
In 1717 with arrival of Austrians Zemun was built up into an important fortification against the Turks, given its positions as a border town and trading centre.
Millenary tower on Gardos hill was erected in 1896 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian State. The tower houses an art studio.
